Magneto-aerotaxis in marine coccoid bacteria.
Magnetotactic cocci swim persistently along local magnetic field lines in a preferred direction that corresponds to downward migration along geomagnetic field lines. Recently, high cell concentrations of magnetotactic cocci have been found in the water columns of chemically stratified, marine and brackish habitats, and not always in the sediments, as would be expected for persistent, downward-m...
متن کاملTasiamide, a cytotoxic peptide from the marine cyanobacterium Symploca sp.
The acyclic peptide tasiamide (1) has been isolated from the marine cyanobacterium Symploca sp. The planar structure and absolute stereochemistry of the peptide were deduced by 2D NMR techniques and chiral HPLC. Tasiamide (1) was cytotoxic against KB and LoVo cells with IC(50) values of 0.48 and 3.47 microg/mL, respectively.
متن کاملNanochlorum eucaryotum: a Very Reduced Coccoid Species of Marine Chlorophyceae
Cell Division, Chlorococcales, Chloroplast, DNA Content, Nanochlorum Nanochlorum eucaryotum was isolated from a sea water aquarium housing different sponge species, cucumarias, small crustaceans and annelids. This bright green marine alga differs from all other known coccoid species. Its most prominent features are its very small cell size (1.5 nm) and its reduced cellular organization. Its cel...
متن کاملCulturing the marine cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus
Prochlorococcus is the numerically dominant primary producer in open ocean ecosystems. Analysis of Prochlorococcus genome sequences from cultured isolates and ocean samples has broadened interest in studying this tiny cell, and efforts are underway to develop it into a model system for studying marine microbial ecology. A critical component of these efforts has been the development of systemati...
متن کاملThree New Malyngamides from the Marine Cyanobacterium Moorea producens
Three new compounds of the malyngamide series, 6,8-di-O-acetylmalyngamide 2 (1), 6-O-acetylmalyngamide 2 (2), and N-demethyl-isomalyngamide I (3), were isolated from the marine cyanobacterium Moorea producens. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis and chemical derivatization and degradation. These compounds stimulated glucose uptake in cultured L6 myotubes. In particular, 6...
